Minneapolis, MN., November 1, 2006 - In keeping with our tradition of continually expanding our capabilities, we are pleased to announce that, on November 1, GLS acquired the assets of St. Paul, Minnesota based Litho Incorporated.
Established in 1947, Litho Incorporated is an award-winning web and sheet fed printer, serving more than 250 customers nationwide. A new entity, Litho of Minnesota, has been created that will continue to operate out of its St. Paul location at 1280 Energy Park Drive. Substantially all of Litho's employees have been retained.
"This is an exciting time for GLS, for Litho of Minnesota, and for all of our clients," says Gary Garner. "By combining the strengths of our two companies, we are able to offer more capabilities to our clients than ever before. With waterless printing, heatset web printing, along with the high speed saddle stitching and perfect binding technology used at Litho of Minnesota, we are now able to complete the customer offerings as one supplier." Some features of this new capability include:
Waterless Printing is an environmentally friendly printing process that, unlike conventional lithography, eliminates the chemical dampening solutions normally used as part of the process. It uses physics in a way that generally yields greater clarity and detail in the final printed product. In fact, the nature of the process is such that screen rulings of 300 lines per inch and over can routinely be reproduced. Waterless is normally used for high impact catalogs and advertising collateral materials. Long popular in Japan and Europe because of its environmental benefits, the process is beginning to be adopted by some printers in the United States.
Web Printing is generally the most economical way to print large-quantity projects of at least 20,000 pieces. Paper is fed from rolls instead of sheets, moving through the press at extremely high speeds. The best web presses can print over 50,000 sheets or folded signatures per hour without compromising quality. Typical web-printed projects include catalogs, magazines, books and newspapers.
Saddle Stitching and Perfect Binding capabilities are highlighted by an 8 pocket ST 400 Heidelberg Stitcher capable of speeds up to 12,000 per hour, along with a 20 pocket Kolbus KM 470 Perfect Binder.
Both GLS and Litho of Minnesota have been recognized for their excellence within the printing industry. Litho has been consistently named by the Minnesota Business Journal as one of Minnesota's top commercial printing companies, and also qualifies annually as one of the Printing Industry of Minnesota's "great printers" for environmental safety and compliance. Litho is the second company in Minnesota to achieve FSC certification. GLS is ISO 9001:2000 Certified, and has been nationally recognized as an industry role model for its environmental efforts.
"GLS and Litho are both proven printing companies with strong customer loyalty and distinct offerings in the printing segment," states Mike McPartland, Chief Financial Officer at GLS. "This new partnership can only help each company grow."
