Electronic media is a growing trend in the world of training and development. It also happens to be Marathon Multimedia’s specialty.
Founded in 1993, Marathon provides the medical community with health education via electronic media. One of Marathon’s clients is Allergan Academy, a company that trains surgeons on the LAP-BAND® adjustable gastric banding procedure.
Earlier this year, Marathon partnered with GLS Companies to produce an elaborate training kit for Allergan. The kits were to include several interactive and print elements, which would be mailed to surgeons who registered for the LAP-BAND training seminars offered by Allergan.

Competitive Edge
Scott Sether, director of sales at Marathon Multimedia, appreciated the great ideas that GLS Account Executive Jim Benedict brought to the table. “It’s great to work with GLS,” said Scott, “because they can really produce things that ‘wow’ the client.”
Previously, assorted education materials were boxed and shipped with very little organization to the process. That’s when Scott met with Jim to discuss creating an all-in-one kit that would have a more polished presentation.
For this project, Marathon used virtually every service offered by GLS-including printing, finishing, kitting, mailing and fulfillment. It was a true collaboration from start to finish. For example, while Marathon handled most of the creative aspects of the kit, GLS packaging experts designed the complex box structure using CAD software.
The final product featured a three-panel foldout cover, a product display compartment held shut by a Velcro fastener, and a 5-inch niche to store the pocket folders and spiral-bound manual. Each kit was carefully tucked into a box sleeve, which had a welcome letter gummy-glued to the inside, and shrink-wrapped prior to mailing.
Winner’s Circle
Allergan’s US Surgeon Kit makes a stylish and professional display on a surgeon’s bookshelf. It houses a collection of six instructional CDs/DVDs, a LAP-BAND product sample framed behind a window-type enclosure, a large spiral-bound Surgeon Training Manual, and a series of four pocket folders. The pocket folders are dimensional as well, each with 1/2-inch space to hold supplemental materials such as laminated displays, brochures and quick reference cards.
Marathon was thrilled to hear that surgeons were impressed with the training kits. In fact, Allergan Academy was so pleased with their work on the project, they recently asked Marathon to start working on another similar project.
According to Scott Sether, this project is a great example of how print and interactive media
can complement each other. Items like CDs and manuals often make a greater impact when packaged together with excellence.
